Rabbi Bunny Freedman is the Founding Director of Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy Network. He received Rabbinic Ordination (Doctorate of Divinity) from Beth Medrash Govoha in 1974. In 1991, Rabbi Freedman created the Jewish Hospice Services Program for Hospice of Michigan. He was then recruited by members of the community to organize the Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network. Rabbi Freedman is the Executive Director of JHCN focusing on community relations, fundraising and staff development.

Rabbi Jennifer Kaluzny Rabbi Jennifer Kaluzny

Rabbi Jennifer Kaluzny joined the JHCN staff in 2001. She received her B.A. in Judaic Studies from the University of Michigan, her M.A. in Hebrew Letters and her Rabbinic Ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. After experienced hospice during the illness of her beloved aunt, Rabbi Kaluzny made the decision to make pastoral and end of life care a central part of her rabbinate. Rabbi Kaluzny is also a pulpit rabbi at Temple Israel of West Bloomfield, Michigan.

Rabbi Hershel Klainberg

Rabbi Hershel Klainberg has been working in hospice care since 1995 when he started chaplaincy work at Danto Healthcare Center. He joined the JHCN staff in 2000. As a child of Holocaust survivors, Rabbi Klainberg feels a special connection when caring for the elderly, especially those who are survivors. Rabbi Klainberg also works as a chaplain for Danto Healthcare. Rabbi Klainberg holds a Master’s degree in Jewish Law and History, as well as a certificate in Pastoral Care.

Rabbi David Nelson

Rabbi David Nelson joined the JHCN staff in 2006 after retiring from his pulpit position at Beth Shalom Synagogue in Oak Park. He received his Rabbinic Ordination from Jewish Theological Seminary in 1967. Rabbi Nelson became involved in hospice care because he felt that one of the most satisfying parts of his rabbinate was the mitzvah of Bikkur Cholim (visiting the sick). Rabbi Nelson serves on the Michigan Executive Clemency Advisory Council to which he was appointed to by Governor Granholm in 2006.

Rabbi Yisrael PinsonRabbi Yisrael Pinson

Rabbi Yisrael Pinson joined JHCN’s chaplaincy team in September 2013, expanding the agency’s reach, particularly in downtown Detroit. Rabbi Pinson has 17 years of experience in counseling families throughout the world as they encounter trying times. His roles have included addiction counseling, pastoral care, and non-profit agency programming and funding development. Rabbi Pinson most recently served as director of the Daniel Sobel Friendship House (a program serving Jewish people recovering from addiction), and as a strategist for Friendship Circle developing social media campaigns and affinity group membership. In 2013, Rabbi Pinson founded Chabad of Greater Downtown Detroit. Educated on three continents and fluent in four languages, Rabbi Pinson currently serves on the boards of Jewish Family Service, NEXTGen Detroit, and Friendship Circle’s Ambassador Club.

Rabbi Rabin received his BA at the Michigan Jewish Institute, and his Rabbinic Ordination from Central Yeshiva Tomchei Temimim in New York. Rabbi Rabin has had 25 years of teaching experience with all ages of children, and has always had a special affinity for the elderly. Rabbi Rabin He has been the house rabbi at Danto Family Health Care Center, since its inception in 1996. His care and compassion brought him to JHCN.

Rabbi Irving ShnipperRabbi Irving Schnipper

Rabbi A. Irving Schnipper has been a chaplain at JHCN for the past five years. He received his Rabbinic Ordination from Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary in June, 1952 and was the pulpit rabbi at Beth Moses / Beth Am from 1962 – 1996. Rabbi Schnipper first became involved in hospice when a member of his congregation was in need of end of life care. Rabbi Schnipper became part of the Jewish Home and Aging Services Chaplaincy program in 1996. In 2004, Rabbi Schnipper joined the JHCN staff.

Rabbi Avie Shapiro

Rabbi Avie Shapiro received his BA in Jewish Studies from Yeshiva University in 1970 and his Teaching Certificate in Torah Studies in 1972. Rabbi Shapiro began working with the elderly when he joined the staff of Jewish Home and Aging Services in 1988. He provided spiritual care to many patients at end of life, which led to his involvement at JHCN. In addition to Rabbi Shapiro’s hospice work, he is also the rabbi at The Fleishman Residence in West Bloomfield.

Rabbi Rachel Shere joined the JHCN staff in 2012. She received her BA from the University of Michigan and MA in Rabbinic Studies and Rabbinic Ordination from American Jewish University. Rabbi Shere completed an internship in Clinical Pastoral Education at Los Angeles’ Cedars Sinai Hospital. Interning at the Fleishman Residence in high school sparked her interest in working with people at the end of life. In addition to her work with JHCN, Rabbi Shere serves as a pulpit rabbi for Adat Shalom in Farmington Hills and on the Board of Kadima.

Barb Haddad has been with JHCN since its inception. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Oakland University and a Master of Arts in Social Work from University of Michigan. Barbara has many years of experience working in medical and psychiatric settings and has been working in the hospice field for over 20 years. Barbara is the director of Lifelinks, a program of Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network and Jewish Family Service that connects patients and their families to a myriad of local resources in the Jewish community.

Lindsay LederLindsay Leder, LMSW, MPA

Lindsay Leder received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Work. During her master’s program she came to Jewish Family Service as an intern with the Volunteer Service Department and the Mentor Connection program. After finishing her degree Lindsay remained on staff with Mentor Connection program where she worked for four years. During that time, she received an additional Master’s degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Nonprofit Management. Lindsay is currently the Director of Volunteer Services for JFS and works together with the staff at JHCN to coordinate volunteer services.

Prior to joining JHCN in 2012, Natalie held a variety of positions in the health care industry including marketing representative for Hospice of Michigan; discharge planner for William Beaumont Hospital; the Director of Admissions for Danto Family Health Care Center; and Manager of Community Programs for the Arthritis Foundation and Executive Director of American House. Natalie served as Past President of the West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce and a speakers bureau ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Association and Arthritis Foundation. Natalie received her degree in social work from The University of Cincinnati.

Sue has been a member of the Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network staff for several years, having played a supporting role in expanding and improving the organization. In addition to bookkeeping responsibilities, Sue provides support to the Director and manages office administrative needs. She oversees clerical responsibilities and assists in assuring that patients and their families are referred to appropriate JHCN personnel.

Sharona Shapiro joined the Jewish Hospice Chaplaincy Network team in 2012 after previously holding positions of Director of Development and Hospital Administrator at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, and the Michigan Area Director of the American Jewish Committee. She currently serves on several community boards including the Michigan Cabinet for the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce and Foundation Boards and the Council for Asian Pacific Americans Community Advisory Committee. Sharona received a BA in Judaic Studies, a BS in Education and a graduate certificate in Organizational Sociology.

Cheryl Weiss was a hospice volunteer for ten years prior to becoming JHCN’s Director of Education. Her responsibilities include coordinating conferences and fundraising. Cheryl’s involvement with hospice began when her husband was a hospice patient in 1997. Cheryl is a former Detroit Public School teacher and past member of the Board of Trustees of St. John Hospice and Home Care. Cheryl has a B.S. in Education and an M.A. in Educational Leadership, both from Wayne State University.

Bashy Zeiler

Bashy joined the staff of JHCN in 2008 to assist in coordinating new fundraising and educational programs. She has over 15 years experience working with various non-profit organizations. In addition, Bashy is the JHCN website coordinator. She was instrumental in building the JHCN’s new website and is responsible for keeping it up to date.
